In 1830’s New Orleans, Étienne Noctier, the last of the Seventh House, collapses at Geneviève Moreau’s gate after a battle that has left him neither dead or alive. A Creole healer, Geneviève saves him against every warning whispered by the spirits and finds herself drawn to the doomed man.

Forbidden to love each other but destined to be together, Étienne and Geneviève defy the Council that controls the Veil and all magic and bind their souls in a desperate act to save them both and the Veil. But their act of devotion births a prophecy the Council fears most.
